First things first, get yourself a colour wheel, it will be very useful to you when coming up with and choosing colours to create your scheme. Now decide on your base colour the colour that will be the most prominent and which will affect all other colour choices you will make, this will normally be a colour you are quite fond off. If you are struggling to choose though, take a look at your surroundings for inspiration or think about what colour most of your cloths are for instance.
If you’re not fortunate enough to be starting with a blank canvass and your colour scheme is being determined by another source such as the colour of the furniture or carpets in the room; don’t let this hinder you, you still have full control over the colours in the scheme.
Using the colour wheel with either your own chosen colour or the colour you have been stuck with, take a look at the ones that will work with it and make your decision whether to go with a harmonious, complementary or tonal theme.
Harmonious Colour Scheme
Choose colours on the wheel that are next to or near one another to create a peaceful, calm and easy living environment.
Complementary Colour Scheme
Complementary colour or contrasting colours are the ones that appear opposite each other on the wheel, you can use these to bring a bit of life and warmth to your scheme or go bold for more of an impacting one.
Tonal Colour Scheme
This is when you choose one colour but then use various tones of the original colour to create a soft and blending colour scheme.
You can use more than 2 colours in one scheme but be wary.
